Snake in a Window
I have to wait at the same, ridiculously long red light almost every morning I drive to work. This morning I was feeling pretty grumpy as I waited for the light to turn green. I looked over at the restaurant on the corner and noticed this stuffed snake sticking out of the window above Northside Billiards on Whitaker Mill Road in Raleigh.

I’ve never noticed it before. It made me smile (on a day when I could really use a smile), and I had to snap a shot. I just called the pool hall to find out if it’s always been there, and the guy who answered the phone just said he puts it up every year around Halloween. He just hasn’t taken it down yet. I’m glad he didn’t, because it made my morning.
Do you drive past anything unusual on your commute to work?

Ok, I don’t drive past it on the way to work unless I go out of the way, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring it up for the thousandth time…the We Want Oprah message in downtown Durham.

I get why We Want Oprah!!! is such an eyesore and sensi-subject for so many Durhamites, but I have to say I love it and it cracks me up (though the conditions and ownership of the building do not give me chuckles). Not every town can say they have the We Want Oprah!!! signage so prominent.

I first happened upon the “We Want Oprah” sign in summer 2004. I was in Durham for a job interview and saw the sign and thought it was so bizarre. So one of the first stories I pursued for the Herald-Sun was about the efforts. It’s crazy to me that the sign is still up!

I know it’s really early in the morning when I drive to work… but I passed these two cows helping each other paint a giant sign. The first time I thought I was half asleep and I just knew I was delirious. But sure enough… they’ve been there the past few days every morning around the same time. Today… it looked like they had almost finished the sign. I’ll check again tomorrow and see what it says.

It’s a good thing you have that picture on your blog to keep readers’ minds out of the gutter. It is, indeed, a brilliant slogan for a sign co! But I’ve always wondered how conversations play out:
Barry: I’m a blogger.
Random person: Oh yeah, what’s your blog called?
Barry: “Dependable Erection:
Random person (eying you up and down): Oh, I see.
Barry: (rolls eyes, tells story for the 1,000th time about the awesome sign in Hillsborough)
And a good laugh is shared by all.

I think the conversations are probably more amusing when Mrs. D is involved. Infinite possibilities.

You know, in over 2 years of blogging, i’ve never had that conversation.
It’s actually more like that scene in Seinfeld.
George: I’m actually a pron star. My name is Buck Naked.
Girl: Really!?

Back at the end of August when Barry came to one of our Community Forums, when we all went around the circle and did introductions, we all got a good laugh.
… (person to his right finishes)… Barry: “I’m a Durham blogger, and I’m a little embarrassed to say this while sitting next to a minister, but the name of my blog is ‘Dependable Erection’, which I named after…”… My coworker was so flabbergasted until she heard the explaination… but she’s a bit (lot) conservative anyhow. ehahe!

btw, “snake in a window” can be another gutter-minded title, and therefore good that you’ve got a picture.
