John Edwards Dropping Out of Presidential Race
That’s according to MSNBC, which is blaring in the background.
I guess that means you won’t be able to drink a beer with him tonight.
Edwards has said that he was going to stick it out, but looks like that’s no longer the case. Are you surprised?
Update: This Associated Press article was just posted discussing the end of his presidential bid.

What I'm Doing

I am a little bit surprised but at the same time I’m not. He did mention how much he was going to stay in the race and he even convinced me for a while. But it just seemed like he was always 2 or 3 steps behind and besides the media was definitely not paying attention to him!

I figured he’d wait until Super Tuesday to see if he could nab some of these SE states and gain some momentum.
I will be careful to leave out any of my personal feelings on this.

Surprised, no. Disappointed, yes.
There’s no benefit to either the Democratic Party or democracy at large to have the nominating process turn into the cult of personality that it’s become, which effectively eliminates most candidates before most voters are even paying attention, and disenfranchises most of the party rank and file.
I don’t know what things were like in the early part of the 20th century, but even as recently as 1992, Democratic voters had an opportunity to choose from a number of candidates through most of the primary season. And more than two candidates made it to the convention with delegates.
We are making cult of personality almost the sole criterion for nominating our candidates, and while we will probably end up with a strong candidate this time around (and by we i mean Democrats), in the long term, this does not bode well for small d democracy.
