Nothing like a half-pound of pork to get you energized

I am ashamed to say this was my lunch today:

I was in such disbelief when the waitress delivered all this meat, that I had to take a picture. Co-worker Wayne Sutton thought this was funny, so he took a picture of me taking a picture of my pork:

So then I had to take a picture of him because I thought it was funny that he was playing with his iPhone while his pork was right in front of him:

We’re in Charlotte, and this BBQ was OK. But I’m always interested in good BBQ. Any suggestions of places I should go when I get back to the Triangle?

  2. Bullock’s in Durham, though I haven’t been in soooo long. I hope it’s still there - a Durham legend.

  3. I used to love Bullock’s. When I lived in Durham, I went a lot! In fact, that’s where I had my going away lunch when I left the Hearld-Sun. I need to go back and try it again!

  4. Coopers. BBQ begins and ends at Coopers in downtown Raleigh.

  5. “Smithfield’s is the best bbq” says Tom. I like their chicken and hushpuppies. I was just going to tell you to go to this place out of novelty. It was one of the strangest places I’ve been. Ole Time BBQ. But I don’t know if it’s the best. I rarely eat BBQ I mostly eat chicken and hushpuppies. ;)

  6. Thanks for the tip. I went to Coopers once a few years ago, but haven’t been back yet. We should meet there for lunch one day!

  7. Brandy, I’ve never heard of either of those places, so I’ll definitely have to check them out!

  8. I am still looking for really good BBQ here in Atlanta. There are too few places…back in SC there was at least 1 great one in each neighborhood.

  10. There is a little mom & pop BBQ place on Hillsborough/Chapel Hill Rd past the State Fair Grounds that still smokes their Q. It’s called ‘Ole Time (http://www.oletimebarbecue.com). I grew up on Bullock’s…I once loved Coopers…but ‘Ole Time has them all beat.

I would put them up there with King’s in Kindston, FWIW. Best ever in terms of Eastern NC style BBQ.

  11. BBQ in Virginia sucks. I really miss S.C. BBQ. They do it right. Since you’re in Charlotte, I’d recommend you skip BBQ and to straight to either Phat Burrito or The Chicken Shack.
